About Juvenile Arthritis:
The term Juvenile Arthritis is used to describe a wide variety of rheumatic diseases that affect the body's connective tissues. The most common rheumatic disease is juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). JRA is a disease of the joints that may also affect other organs; symptoms include stiffness, pain, and fatigue. Rheumatic disease is one of the most prevalent chronic illnesses among children. In fact, there are more that 285,000 children living with some form of arthritis-more children than diabetes or cerebral palsy. Among the rheumatic diseases the Division of Rheumatology diagnoses and treats are: juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, dermatomyositis, ankylosing spondylitis, acute rheumatic fever, Raynaud's phenomenon, vasculitis, lyme disease, fibromyalgia, chronic limb pains, scleroderma, and reflex sympathetic dystrophy.
About the Division of Rheumatology at Cincinnati Children's
Founded in 1973, The Division of Rheumatology at Cincinnati Children's has three internationally recognized branches: research, clinic (The Special Treatment Center for Juvenile Arthritis), and education. Each branch is an essential component of CHMC pediatric rheumatology. We are one of the leading pediatric rheumatology research facilities in the world, looked to as trailblazers in clinical trials for new medications. We also conduct groundbreaking research in the genetic aspects of rheumatic disease. With this growing knowledge so close at hand, our clinical doctors can more quickly diagnose and more effectively treat our 3,000 patients a year. Our eight pediatric rheumatologists hold faculty positions at the University of Cincinnati and are integrally involved in the education of pediatric residents, medical students, and clinical fellows interested in specializing in rheumatology.
About the Division of Rheumatology's patient programs
Of equal importance are the patient programs which benefit from the proceeds of Win a Wine Cellar. Rheumatology's patient clinic is known as the Special Treatment Center for Juvenile Arthritis. These programs include:
- Camp Wekandu, a residential arthritis camp for school age children
- Rheumatology Educational Sources for patients and families
- Wheelchairs and other rehabilitation equipment are provided for patients
- American Juvenile Arthritis Organization (AJAO) Conference Scholarships
- Clinical trials to test new medications
With the support of the Friends of the Special Treatment Center for Juvenile Arthritis, fundraisers, and various grants, these programs have become an essential conduit for education, self-esteem and acceptance in the lives of our STC families.
